An SAP go-live is a milestone. Who owns the outcome?
Completing an SAP implementation and improving business performance are related achievements. They require different questions and clear ownership.
What delivery can prove
Delivery measures can show whether an agreed scope was configured, tested and deployed. They can also track migration, defects, training completion and system availability. Those measures matter, but they do not establish the full business outcome.
What the business must own
If the investment aims to improve delivery reliability, reduce inventory or simplify planning, someone in the business must own that performance change. That includes the process choices and behaviour needed to use the new capability.
The technology team cannot alone control planning discipline, master-data quality or how exceptions are handled across departments.
Define the ownership before the programme starts
- Delivery owner: accountable for the agreed technical and implementation scope.
- Business outcome owner: accountable for the operational change and associated measures.
- Finance validator: challenges the economic assumptions and evidence for proposed benefits.
- Governance: defines when progress is reviewed and which decisions need escalation.
A manufacturing scenario
A new planning capability is deployed, but planners continue to rely on local spreadsheets because decision rights and exception processes remain unclear. The implementation milestone may be complete while the expected planning improvement remains unrealised.
This hypothetical example shows why operating model readiness matters alongside system readiness. It is not an account of a Soluvise client engagement.
Measure the intended change
Agree an initial baseline, proposed targets, review cadence and evidence sources. Identify the costs and decisions needed to capture a benefit. Review adoption and process performance after go-live, rather than closing the value discussion at deployment.
